I find it hard to believe that you can get zebras for 15 bucks a piece. Just selling them to the LFS costs upwards of 30 dollars, usually x2 by the owner to increase profit +s/h. Unless you're a fish store owner youself or you can order direct from a supplier w/o having to pay for shipping, I find it highly unlikely. But if you really have such an opportunity, I don't see why you shouldn't go for it.

Personally, I wouldn't even spend 15 bucks on a zebra plec unless I was 100 percent (plus, they need some high temps, too, higher than the preferred ranges of many of the species listed, especially cories) that I'd find him alive and not finless the very next day.

Zebra plecos I can find for $18 which surprises me because I see them going on the internet for like $70 a piece and stuff.

Yes I know what zebra plecos look like and it's not just a naming error. Hard to mistake them.

I'd vote for panda corys. They're expensive most places??? I get panda cory's here (even at LFS) for $2.49. Otos are only $1. Most fish are pretty cheap I guess, just never really thought about it.

i have a well-established 55G tank with ample filtration (mechanical and biological) that currently houses:

-2 angels
-2 gouramis (gold/pearl)
-5 threadfin rainbows
-5 red minor tetras
-4 harlequin rasboras
-5 red/blue columbian tetras
-1 green spot puffer
-1 siamese flying fox
-1 rubber lip pleco (to be added soon)

do you think i have room to add a school of six cories, such as aeanus cories, or panda cories?

Too bad you eren't looking last month...a LFS had a tank full here, at just $3.99 each...and half that during the 2for1 sale.

If you have the extra room, I'll bet 'puff'd greatly appreciate it if you could get him his own seperate tank, for he'll grow to more than twice that size (not to mention grow in aggression). Plus, he'll be a lot better off in brackish conditions. I'm happy that you've yet to run into any trouble. You should keep it that way.

When I first saw a little gsp at my lfs, I HAD to get him (keep in mind this was a long time aog, before I had any real experience). I kept him in a similar community setting with angels and gouramis for about a year and a half. Then, one day, I awoke to find half of my fish finless and cowering in a corner, whilst the little puffer was happily swimming around at the other side of my tank, with a largely protruded belly. I then moved him to his own tank and within a week, gave him to a friend who had a hefty brackish tank. They're so cute, though.

btw, i was kind of surprised to find that most of you consider my tank to be quite full. if you're following the inch/gallon rule, i suppose it is, but most tetras and other small fish don't need to be counted as a full "inch" do they? most of the fish i have are small and don't product a lot of waste.

furthermore, i have volcanic rock as decor in the tank (tonnes of surface area for good bacteria) and ample filtration. i also do at least a 25% water change once a week.

with this added info, do you think it would be okay to add some cories?

here's the story with the puffer:
i originally got him when i had an african cichlid tank, as they share similar water preferences.anyhow, the cichlids didn't work out (this was back in my newby days - i didn't plan the community out well enough and aggression developed) so i found the cichlids new homes. anyhow, i couldn't bear to get rid of the puffer, so i thought i'd try him with some community fish. he's fine! no aggression whatsoever. he's perfectly happy puttering around the filter intake and heater; he's hilarious. i have a large acrylic log ornament with fungis "shelves" that he rests on. i've had him two years already... he's about 2.5" long.

the gouramis and angels have never caused me any trouble either. i guess i'm lucky!

thanks for the advice!

If you move the puffer, you could (and should) add a school of small cories. They're great little guys!
