Is there a list somewhere that tells you what is illegal to keep in your country? In one of my other threads, someone stated that my tadpole may be an American Bullfrog which is illegal to keep in some parts of Canada. I've seen other posts of people saying a certain species of fish is not legal to keep in their country. How does a rookie hobbyist know what is legal and what is illegal?

in canada it is illegal to house any game fish or reptile or amphibian that has a season many other animals r illegal to keep to under specific regulations u may keep some others u cant it is illegal to keep bullfrogs n there tad poles as there is a season for them in canada many stores do stock n sell them as well as snapping turtles map n false map turtles the other day i even saw a eastern softshell turtle for sae which r threatened laws r laws some r stupid others r designed to protect
i woodnt worry bout keepin ur bullfrog ud never get charged its like r they gunna charge everyone for the blue gill or sunfish they threw in the pond nah ur local MNR should b able to provide a list for u anything lsited endangered or threatened u can not keep also hope that helps

In Canada, laws regarding these things come from three levels...federal, then provincial, then municipal. The laws where you are will be unique....for instance, almost anything goes provincially in Ontario (except native species), but many of the municipalities have VERY restrictive laws. And don't fool yourself...these laws ARE enforced, if sometimes not very actively...and in some cases, the fines can range into 5 figures.
