In watching my green tiger loach swim with the my tiger dats, it reminded me of the fish (can't think of the name) that swims with the ocean sharks to help clean and get the scraps. I was just wondering if there was any studies on loaches doing this on any fish.

Are you thinking of the remora? They swim with (and attach themselves to) sharks to clean them of parasites. It helps to keep the sharks healthy.

I'm pretty sure loaches don't (and can't) do this, because they are not equipped to eat parasites. As for trying to get scrap food, I'm not entirely sure. I would think that the loach is just hanging out with similarly patterned fish, not waiting for leftovers. If you had other loaches, the odd behavior would probably cease.

And when he gets to Heaven, to Saint Peter he will tell: "One more Marine reporting, Sir! I've served my time in Hell."

yeah the remora thats the fish i was thnking of. I have 5 striata and a yoyo with the zebra, the wierd part of the behavior is that the 3 dats hang out under the same piece of wood, even when just 1 dat comes out the loach will follow that one. I'm thinking that if it was just a schooling behavior the loach would stay with the other 2.

i actually notice that with my sergeant major loach. he sometimes follows my peacock cichlid around and seems to wanna find food. The cichlid doesn't seem to mind. maybe loaches do have an opportunistic behavior to them that not many people know about.

ALL fish are opportunistic feeders in some matter or another. thats just part of the survival instinct. why expend more energy hunting or searching out food when u can just follow other fish to a sure meal? my eupterus cat does the same thing. but usually once it finds what the other fish are munchin on, he digs right in instead of takin just scraps.
