I heard them called borneo plecos before but they're not from Borneo and they're not plecos... Anyway, they get to about 3" or so I've heard.

Yep...they're usually really shyish during the day and stick to the back of the tank (there's a powerhead and filter intakes there too, they like the current)...but they always come clean the front and sides of the tank 10 mins after the lights go out. If you put a powerhead in the front of the tank they will sit in front of it for hours on end

They clean great, they eat lots of kinds of algae (many that ottos won't), and they do a good job at it. I have a magnetic algae scraper that I scrape the front of the tank off with every week just to get the few missed spots off...but I leave the sides and back for them to munch on all they want

Yes, I do have a pair...I've set the tank up properly and given them a place to spawn if they wish...but I doubt that they will until this winter when the temp goes down to 72 or so. They're usually bred by chance matings anyway...they're kinda hard to breed.

Personally I think the pic looks cooler than the fish itself...it's just the composition and the clairity of the photo that makes it look cool ...it's is still a cool fish tho...

I forgot to add that most species grow to 3"...some grow to 4" tho...

They will tolerate tropical temps (my pair has been in a tank that's 80 degrees F for about a month with no ill effects other than skittishness), but they will die if they are in hot water for too long... It's summer and my tanks are 8 degrees warmer than usual...

they are sooo cool looking, too bad they are cold water, because its time for me to trade me 7 inch pleco in now before it becomes godzilla and those loaches just looking sweet... maybe i'll just get another pleco

They've been given a variety of names including butterfly pleco, butterfly loach, borneo loach/plec, hillies...lots

They're fairly easy to keep if there's a lot of current, and plenty of algae. They're kinda nit picky about water conditions, as with all scaleless fish... They're a cold water fish and prefer lower temps...

Go check out their profile on loaches.com or check out the profile that I wrote for this site when it comes up

And they are 100% coolwater fish.

A few months in a tropical tank is all it takes for them to keel over.

Definately sounds like a hillstream loach to me. Should really be kept in river tanks though as they need lots of water circulation/current.
