Personally, I just test it approximately with my fingers... when you're doing 20-30% water changes a few degrees isn't going to make a huge difference.

All my water change water is from an RO unit and I just place the required amount into containers and place a spare heater in them overnight. Failiing that, if you do it correctly and SENSIBLY, you 'promote' spawning by adding cooler water to the tank.

I just fill gallon jugs and let them sit out for a few days. During the warmer months, as long as the jugs are in the same room as the tanks the temperatures will be almost identical. But, during the cold months, I have to use a little space heater to warm the water in the jugs. Like superlion said, as long as the new water's temp is close to the tank's temp, the overall temperature won't be effected greatly.

I let the hot water from the tap warm up a bit, then turn on the cold until it feels the same (I use the inside of my wrist to test, like you're supposed to when you give babies a bath)... I also recheck it several times during filling to make sure it still feels right. Although, if I need to do a big change on my 5g or 10g then I let the water sit out overnight... but for my 55g it's not going to matter that much if I'm a degree or two off.

just get huge ruber maid containers, fill them with water, put a heater in, set it to the temp in ur tank, and let sit over night!
