i move my fish back n forth alot ive never lsot any
except one piranha
i jsut bag up my fish in there own water n take the filter medi out n bag it to with tank water i use the large ziplock frezer bags n styrofoam boxes for my piranhas they bite thro bags
ive never seen a difference thats noticeable in my fish from being moved it only takes bout 30-40 minutes for there full color to return after being replaced in a tank jsut as long as the temp remains stable n the water isnt chlorinated they should b fine
but yes larger tanks r better i have tanks all over n the larger ones always seem more active then my smaller 10s n 15s however they have smaller fish inthem to

what kind of fish do u have?

I have an idea, but I'm not sure about it...

Take one tank down and put all your fish in the one tank. (make sure you move your tanks and stuff last) Then put the water from the tank in some buckets and float the filter media in one of the buckets. Leave the gravel/sand in the tank with enough water to cover it. Move the tank and set it up. Move your fish like you would move them from a lfs. Place them in the already set-up tank and go repeat the steps with the other tank except the transportation of the fish (this may not work depending on how far your moves are) Maybe this helps

that was my original idea!! i planned to just put all in one tank for like a day then set up the other tank at the new house, then transfer all of them to it then take the other tank down. the biggest problem is that the house we are moving to is only temporary. we cant move into the new house for like 4-6 weeks. so i have to move the tanks then a cuple weeks later move them again. that was the big thing. the first house is just down the road (my nans) and the second is about 15 mins away

I'm a college student and need to move my fish a couple times a year. I dont feed them for a day before, then I siphon some tank water into a large cooler (enough for the fish to be alright, but not so much that it splashes out the top). If there are any delicate or agressive fish, I keep them in an LFS plastic bag. I've never lost a fish this way, but the drive is only about 2 hours. I've successfully moved a pleco, rams, neon and glolite tetras, ottos and bettas without incident. Make sure your fish tank is the last thing to pack and the first thing to unpack. When I arrive I move the water from the cooler back into the tank and add water from the new house to fill the tank, this way there is a gradual transition of water types. Good luck.

I might have to move in the next couple months also.. It'll take longer to transfer the fish and tanks then it will take to move all my furniture !

Wish I could put them all in one tank but then I'd have alot of missing fish and a very happy tiger oscar

If you have one (or two) good 'smaller' LFS that you regularly use to purchase your stuff, I'm pretty sure that they would 'house' your fish for a few weeks/months. It wouldn't be too much hassle for them to set aside even a small space for your fish considering your custom.
I am speaking from experience as I've done it twice now when I've moved, first time with trop and then with marine. OK, I spend a lot of money in these stores but even so, your custom should be appreciated enough if you use them regularly. If this is not something you can consider - I'd go with the buckets and filter material way. Believe it or not, I've been forced to use a domestic bin in the past, with heater and filter in, fully laden with fish, for a few days until I could re-house them. Emergency measures I know, but the fish didn't suffer long term effects - if any at all.
