My fish tank is very green.I have tried everything to fixs this.
I have even keeped the lights off for a hole day.Nothing is working.
I would like to know if i was to do a very big water change(like 75% of the water)would this kill my fish.
I have to get rid of the green water.
I like to see my fish again.

I have tring to get my water clear for over a month.

PLEASE HELP

hi ty,

75% is quite a large water change. probably not recommended, what exactly have you tried to get rid of the green water? how similar are the parameters of your tank to your aged water? also what kind of fish do you have in the tank? if they are quite hardy then the risk of such a big water change might be less

A diatom filter should do the trick if I remember correctly.

How frequently have you been doing water changes Rather than one large water change, smaller more frequent water changes may help. Lights off for one day isn't going to be enough....A complete blackout with the tank covered to combat any outside light for a few days may help...and of course stop all ferts/co2 for the time being.

HI

I have been doing 25% water change once a week.sometime more.I have bought stuff called green-x to remove phosphate hoping that would work.Turned off the lights or not leaving them on so long.
I DONT HAVE A TEST KIT.So i dont know what the water is like.
I get my water tested at the pet store.

I have a 50g tank 36" long 16" wide 18" high

I have 6 rosey barbs,4 corys,2 angels and 1 bristlenose

A water change that large probably will not kill your fish if they are healthy. However, the problem may actually be the water. Phosphates, for example, are basically a fertilizer for algae that can be present in tap water.

Something I have found to help green water is proper aeration. When I first got an air pump the difference was quite amazing to what it had been before.

You,ll all hate me for saying this but I had a tough algae bloom in one of my tanks that I coldnt get rid of and I used a product called algaefix and it cleared it up fast. I dont use chemicals often but in that case it did the trick. You should post what kind of fish are in your tank though (the product I used will kill crustaceans)and is it planted? Try a natural approach first. Also try to find the cause, or it may reoccur. My tank was set up for a year then I got the algae bloom and havent had one since, never found the cause. Also that was the second product I tried the first by jungle labs did nothing. Good luck.

sorry I was typing this up as the other posts were going up This obviously wont work with plants.
