They will not fight. However, if the Gar goes and eats the Knifefish, I wouldn't be surprised.

How big of a tank? I like the unusual fish too.

I think the african butterfly fish stays around 4 inches. And i believe the archer fish stays small as well. If you wont something really cool i would go the route of one of the smaller eels that stays under a foot.

How small is semi-small?:%) Most oddballs get pretty big, actually, which is somewhat of a shame. Some smaller ones include the African Butterfly, small Puffer species, and the South American Leaf Fish. Some oddballs that get around a foot include the smaller bichirs and some of the catfish.

The Archer fish can also approach a foot, and since it is brackish it is not a good tankmate for most freshwater fish. I also can't think of an eel that stays under a foot, however eels generally can be kept in tanks smaller than other fish of equal length.

I wouldn't really be putting these two fish in a 29 gallon together.

Ropefish get too big, Eels are Spiny Eels, they range from 6 inch species to 3+ foot species. I made a list of smaller species, I will ave a look for it and copy it to this topic.
