However, if the Gar goes and eats the Knifefish, I wouldn't be surprised. How big of a tank? And i believe the archer fish stays small as well. If you wont something really cool i would go the route of one of the smaller eels that stays under a foot. |

Some smaller ones include the African Butterfly, small Puffer species, and the South American Leaf Fish. Some oddballs that get around a foot include the smaller bichirs and some of the catfish. The Archer fish can also approach a foot, and since it is brackish it is not a good tankmate for most freshwater fish. I also can't think of an eel that stays under a foot, however eels generally can be kept in tanks smaller than other fish of equal length. I wouldn't really be putting these two fish in a 29 gallon together.
