i am considering a gar or two for a twenty gallon aquarium, they will eventually be transfered into a much larger tank. Does anyone have any information on these fish? i know there are many diffrent types of gar, the most common ones ive seen in lfs are the long nosed gar (i think that is what they were called) or needle nose gars.

i couldnt find any information, so i would really appreciate it. thank you

john

If by really big tank you mean a few thousand gallons then you might do okay, they get large...very large. IMO not a tank fish @all .

The Needlenose Gar isn't even a true gar. All true gars exceed three feet in length.

Don't know about the needlenose, but the longnose gar we were quizzed on today in my ichthyology lab was over 2' long! (and these fish are ambush predators, best to have a tank wide enough to turn and long enough for a burst of speed. ie, REALLY big.

Assuming you are referring to the Xenentodon cancila (needle nose gar, needlefish), they rarely exceed a foot in length, IME. They are an interesting fish to keep, although you have to be careful working on the tank. They like fingers, although they generally do not cause any real damage.
