Those are both 20G tanks, the bottom one is a long tank, the top one is a 20 high. It took me a few hours to measure the wood, cut it, and screw it together. I did it all by myself, and would be much easier if you had someone to help. Home depot will cut the wood for you for a price, so you don't have to have a saw or anything, just a screw driver/drill. Everything is 2 X 4 peices of wood, except the flat pieces that the tank rests on. You will want some support beams across the bottom for the tank to rest on. It is about 8 feet tall, about 2'8" wide to give some space on the sides of the tanks. It is 1' 4" front to back.

BTW mattyboombatty, that stand is really nice!
I was thinking of making something (with the help of my dad) like that to hold a 10 and a 5 1/2 gallon.
Was it pretty simple to make?

I think it should be find because I know that guppies like current...not too sure about the snails though, but I don't see any problems. The only thing I would worry about is that the intake tube would have alot of "sucking" power and if your looking into breeding your guppies in the actual tank, they may get sucked up more easily.
You can never have too much extra filteration so I would go for it!

by the way do you guys think a proquatics 1600 cannister (rated for 29-75 gallon tanks) filter would be to much for a 20 gallon full of guppies and snails?

You could make your own, it wasn't hard and it's way sturdier than anything I've seen at a fish store. Mine could use some paint or something though. I just haven't had time.

Azrael- can I show you a pic of my tank
new photo of 25g
I have actually, from February this year till now, kept almost every single guppy born. If you can see my tank, there is a ton of fish in there. I gave away about 40-50 fry to my sister. I had a massive die off of guppies though in august because I bought a new male and didnt quarantine him, and I believe he brought in the "fish flu" and wiped out nearly 2/3rds of my population, including some of my carefully bred guppies. (I was trying to create my own strain). I then have been very careful in quarantining new fish, and am finally back up there in the numbers. After my exams however, I will be taking in approx. 20 of my 27 orange sunburst platys, and an assortment of my 100+ guppies to one of the LFS, in the first of what I hope to be a long term breeding program with the LFS. This will definetly take the strain off the filters Im sure.
I also have a 10g "nursery tank" which currently houses 9 of my plumpest female guppies, and approx. 100 new week-10 day old fry currently. I just select once a month my 12 most pregnant females and pop them into the nursery tank. When they get slim after birth I replace them to the group tank. Its not that I dont get ANY fry in the 25g, but I only get a limited number- mostly due to the platys in the tank eating fry.
I really didnt much like guppies but I got 3 to try, and before long my 10g was full, so when I got the 90g and moved my 25g community out, the guppies and platys got the 25g. I really love guppies now, they are so friendly, so playful, very peaceful kind fish. I would love to upgrade to a 55 or 75 for just guppies in the future.
I also keep 2 cascade filters on my 25g, a 150 and a 100, and get a turnover rate of 10 times per hour, and I do a 40% approx. water change every weekend.

Azrael- What I have had great success with my guppy fry is with making my own fry food. Heres what I do:
I have approx. 12 different kinds of fish food around.
I take a bowl and measure out equal ingredients of everything:
staple flake nutrafin
8 veggie flake HBH
Brine Shrimp Flake OSI
tubifex worms
shrimp pellets
red grubs/freeze dried bloodworms
betta flakes
algae wafers
bottom feeder wafers
sinking crumbles
etc etc
I then take a large heavy spoon and grind everything into a fine powder. (takes about an hour with the pellets in there and breaks in between grinding sessions).
I then pop it all into a little fish food container, and then im set for a couple of batches of fry.
I have found this food to be much richer and healthier for fry than "fry bites" store brand, which is really only a limited variety of foods (much like a staple flake- not much of anything special in it).
I then supplement by guppy fry with frozen daphnia soaked in garlic and vitamins after a week of age, once a day, and continue to feed the fry mash until the fry reach about half inch size, at which time I slowly wean them onto regular adult food just slightly crushed.

That sounds like a nice tank. Do you plan to get a variety of color or do you want to have some sort of color scheme?

You can also cover the filter intake. Some people use nylon, but I've found it gets dirty quickly. I use cheesecloth. Being cotton it disintegrates so I have to replace it more frequently. It isn't expensive though.

Floating plants are helpful to give your fry hiding places and they also suck up nitrates.

I am going to set up a new 20 gallon to breed guppies and snails in it. Questions i have is what should my guppie m/f ratio be? Should i use a 20 tall or 20 long? What are the obvious physical differences between m or f guppies to make sure i get the right sex? Any tips on the snails would be good, as i am just gonna throw in some plants and some basic pond snails and hope for the best.

well i could add a shoal of cories, i wish i had access to pygmy or pandas. But i really need the snails, my dwarf puffers need to crunch them. Thanks to everyone who has responded and to anyone else if they respond.

A penguin would be just fine as well- I hear they make a top notch filter too!
Or an internal filter would work very well as well.
You could consider as well a bottom feeder of some type to take care of any extra food- say like a BN pleco, or a cory of some kind- like hasbrosus, pygmy/dainty cory, pandas, aggassizi, trilineatus etc.
I forgot to mention, when it comes to tall or long, for guppies I havent noticed much of a preference. My sister keeps her gupps in a long tank, (33g), I keep mine in a tall tank (25g), and all fish seem equally happy.
Just choose the tank you prefer, guppies love anything with water in it and the opposite gender

i have never seen a cascade power filter before. I was thinking of maybe a penguin 125, and maybe an internal sponge filter of some type since you said guppies prefer a current.

I said the males are usually more colorful then the females, and they usually have more of a pattern, but alot of females have color too.

Yes, all livebearers have the same fins as that. Mollies, Guppies, Endlers, Platys- its pretty much a sure fire way to tell.
