It depends on what species of puffer...

All are aggressive to some degree (and some are just plain vicious), and many are hardwater brackish fish. Ottos do best in a soft water aquarium and do not tolorate salt.

I'm not your neighbor, you Bakersfield trash.

I would recommend 1 dwarf per 3 gallons, but nothing less than a 10G.So 3 for a 10g, 6-7 for a 20g and 10 for a 30g. I would also highly recommend alot of plants, ones that grow to at least 2/3rds the height of your tank. I keep an equal amount of ottos as puffers(1 puffer-1 otto,30 puffers-30 ottos) none of the two grow to reach 2 inch so your safe. Try this place http://null]http://null[/link][link=http://www.dwarfpuffers.com/index.htm they are all about D puffers....Good luck and enjoy...

I wouldn't go with that many otos. I'd put 5 in.

i havent decided on what size tank i am gonna go with yet but either 3 of those would be easy enough to find space for and or get

For a 29 gallon, I'd go with 1-2 amazon puffers, ottos, and some schooling tets (cardinals work well).

3 gallons per puffer sounds good. If you're running a 29 gallon, I'd go with 8 puffers and a school of ottos.

The stocking for the amazon tank could be as follows:
13 cardinals, 5 ottos, 2 puffers--or something like that.

I have a 20 gallon (high) for my dwarf puffer tank. I have 6 DPs and 3 Ottos (and some ghost shrimp that get eaten over time).
It has a lot of live plants & caves, and I have to regularly feed my Ottos because there isn't enough algae in the tank.

(I guess I call the "Amazon Puffer" a South American Puffer. I have a 50 gallon with 3 of those, and I am only adding a pair of BNs for algae. Mine are VERY active...and considering the way they act, I think any other fish I add would be considered food...I'm already worried about the BNs. Mine act like little pirahnas, LoL. But in my research on SAPs, very few fish are recommended as tankmates, but every fish is different...LoL Mine seem to have more personality than what I thought they would.)

Any plants are fine, fake or live...
The plants are purely for territory and for breaking the line of sight from puffer to puffer.
Puffers usually only accept live food, if yours happens to not be eating.
Puffers should be occasionally fed a snail to keep their teeth trimmed, if you didn't know that...Do not give them Malaysian Trumpet Snails(spiral shell) as their shells are too hard for the puffer's teeth

The bulb may need to be replaced, if it's a year old. But you can do low light plants, such as Anubias, Java Fern, and Java Moss. Even some Apons would do OK, mine did in lower light, they just didn't grow as fast.
But fake plants will work, or you could use both. Or you can always upgrade the fixture, if you wanted to.

Just make sure the tank is cycled before adding the Puffers or Ottos, as both are too sensitive to do well (or live) through a cycle. (Although from what you said, they may already be in the 29 gal?) And the weekly water changes are very important.

My puffers all eat frozen foods, just no flakes. And many LFSs will give you pest pond snails as well.
Hmm, keep an eye out for internal parasites, tends to be a problem in puffers. All mine have had them.

Puffers are great, very fun to have around!

SAs (after irrubescos) are the most peaceful puffers I know of, and are regularly found with tetras in their natural enviornment, or so I'd assume. After seeing a setup similar to the aforementioned one @ Sea World San Diego, I convinced my boss to set up a SA puffer tank. So far it's been a month, and no cardy fatalities.

Most people who have tried keeping BBGs with dwarves have done so successfully.
