i posted this question in the breeding forum, and i haven't gotten any answers, so i'll try in here.

anyhow, i have some killifish fry that range from 2-6 days old. most of them are "sticking" to the sides or bottom of the tank rather than swimming free.

is this normal?

I only have experience with krib and angel fry, but I'd assume it'd be the same for killis. The angel and krib fry started swimming a week or 2 after hatching. Before that they were all at the bottom with very little mobility. Seeing as yours are only 2-6 days old, I'd say it's normal

Anyone correct me if I'm wrong.

whew. i was worried that they weren't eating and that there was something wrong with them.

it makes sense that they would follow the same developement as kribs and angels.

make sure the water is clear clean and cycled. make sure that there is no film from hatching (bacteriafilm or protein). somtimes a film will develope on the sides of the tank if using a small tank or plastic box (since some kilibreeders use plastic shoe boxes to hatch kilis) and at the surface of the water. some frys will stick too it. you dont want the frys to stick to this film once they use up their yolk sacs.

what kind of kilis are these? some will stay at the bottom for a few days while their yolk sacs are used up.

Most fish (particularly of egg-laying species) start off life with a yolk sac from the egg. They just sit around until the yolk sac is used up, at which time they have to start foraging for food themselves.

they are aphyosemion bitaeniatum. they are in a 2 1/2 gallon bare bottom tank with a sponge box filter and a heater. the temperature is 74 F and the water is from the parent's tank (which has a pH of about 7.2 and is stained with tannins from driftwood). there is also a clump of java moss in the tank.

i feed the babies frozen baby brine shrimp, but they don't seem to be "looking" for food.
