although i think fish can recognize their group members, i don't think they could count. any size over 3 should be the same for them for sexual behavior. schooling behavior does change by mass, but there isn't much change between 10 or 11 fish for that matter.
i say take as many as you like, and don't think about coupling schooling fish. i don't think they are (almost no "schooling" animal does).

Some fish pair off, angels are particularly known for it. There actually is SOME order to our fish once in awhile...

Do fish pair off? I thought it was sort of a free for all.

I'm more of an even number fan when it comes to fish. What if you have 2 male and 3 female angelfish, the others pair off, and you have one female w/o a mate?

And when he gets to Heaven, to Saint Peter he will tell: "One more Marine reporting, Sir! I've served my time in Hell."

I'm just really big on even numbers (not only about fish, I just do everything in twos...), so I always recommend even numbers in schools...

I have thought about that same thing. I have tiger barbs, started out with 6 (4 male, 2 female) and lost one in a powerhead accident. The tiger barbs still seem to be doing fine in a group of 5 now (3 male, 2 female). I am not sure of the sex of the Buenos Aires Tetra, but they seem to like their group of 4. I believe both of those fish are schooling fish. Now, my Blind Cave fish ... they just do their own thing, they are so clumsy. And the 2 Plecos, while not schooling fish, do seem to enjoy the company of each other. They huddle together.
