hello, i currently have a 29 gallon tank with two dinosaur eels, a glass knifefish, a cory and 3 dainos (cory and dainos were used to speed up the cycling of the tank). my question is, im going to add one more knifefish but i was wondering if a butterfly fish would be compatable with my fish? And i do know that these fish are going to get bigger then the aquariums capacity, i am planning on getting a much larger tank in the near future. thank you

johnny

What species of bichir do you have? Your knife and smaller fish are potential meals for the bichirs once they mature, you realise.

Your bichirs are predators and will eventually eat your cory and danios. I can pretty much guarantee it.

I think butterfly fish are too big to fit in a bichirs mouth. However, I have never seen a full size Bichir. My two are about 6-7". I also find Bichirs have a heck of a time eating things that are on the surface. Whenever I throw crickets in the tank for other fish, the bichirs try to go up and snag one but miss the cricket by an inch or so. It's kinda funny actually. They get so upset but won't quit trying! But when I put a goldfish or earthworm in the tank, the bichirs will hunt it down and catch it in seconds.

A full-grown one would be too large for an adult Senegal bichir, but I would not put money on a 2"-3" specimen not ending up eaten or gnawed on.
