We have a black banded leporconis (sic). We have had him in excess of two years and he is now over 7" long. We named him Lockjaw. Anyway, the problem is that recently he has become very mean towards every other fish in the tank, a 55gl. He is in with some very shady characters (oscar, snook, green terror)all of which get along fine. Any suggestions? I thought about a new cave... we may have to trade him in.

Welcome to FP. If you want to house all of your fish long term, you'll need a much larger tank. The Oscar alone will grow too large for the 55 and produces a huge bioload. If you can't afford an upgrade to a larger tank, you should return some of the fish to your LFS.

A large tank will probally solve agression problems, your tank mighty be too small for your fish to establish it's territory. If you cannot upgrade into a larger tank, try re-arranging decoration, destroying territory boundaries so he fish won't know which territory they are in.

Definitely overstocked, or if the fish are still juveniles, the tank will be overstocked when grow. Rearranging the decor might provide temporary relief only. Adding another cave will probably provide no results. You need a larger tank.

I'd guess you're talking about the bay snook...Petenia splendida. A gentle giant in the cichlid world, especially considering it's a guapote. They get very big (16-18" at least) but are typically not very aggressive. They are highly predatory though and will eat anything that will fit into their huge mouths.

We bought "lockjaw" a new cave and the whole tank has done a turn around. He guards the cave, but has quit with all the nipping and chasing of the other fish. Do need a bigger tank, but the house is already a zoo (haha). Thinking about a 75gl. Already have the 55 and a 29. Where does it stop :-)

oh, the snook is a bay snook or that's what the lfs said. Right now is about 4" long. We love him to death. Does have a big mouth and is very easy going fish. Will eat pellets from your hand.
