I have 4 cherry barbs in my 10g right now. If I added 2 otos would I be overstocked? Or could I have room for even more? I know the inch per gallon thing is basically a general rule but someone told me I also need to calculate surface area because I might be able to fit some more fish. Anyone have opinions on this?

Um, that's probably fine. Keep in mind that ottos poop like mad, though.

I would say thats fine. No more than 2 ottos though. I go by a general rule , 1 otto per 10g so he gets enough food. However, if your 10g is as algaed as my 10g I think you could easily get away with 2.
Another option would be a hillstream loach.
Look those guys up on Google. Great Algae eater. The one in my 10g keeps it nice and clean but still allows him to have some algae build up for food for him.

I wouldn't suggest that you get any more fish other than the two otos. Unfortunately, they prefer groups so you may not see their true potential.

True you won't see their true behavior unless they are in a group.

I would go ahead and get 3 ottos instead of 2. They prefer to have a few buddies to hang out with.If there is not enough algea feed them algea wafers. HTH fish1

with regards to feeding...you can grow extra algae for them by putting some pebbles in a jam jar of tank water on a sunny windowsill, then dropping the pebbles into the tank.
