Hmm..a paludarium tank could be a great thing to have
I think i will have it one day. With this one you can have fish with salamanders, lizards, frogs etc.
Anyone have one...is it difficult to maintain?
I think it would be a great thing to try this one out..iam surely going to do it one day

I know human beings and fish can co-exist peacefully.

I had to search through Yahoo to even know what a paludarium is. I found a brief overview at http://freshaquarium.about.com/cs/paludriums/l/blpaludarium.htm and it looks like it would take a lot of effort to maintain all those aspects of the system.

Good luck.

A good book for more info on paludariums is "Animals & Fishes in Aquaterrariums", published by TFH. That might help get you started

That's gonna depend on what you do with the paludarium. Really you can make a paludarium simply by having some sort of undecorated platform with no plants or anything; as long as there is some sort of land out of water, technically it can be considered a paludarium. However, the real paludariums are ones that combine terrarium and aquarium, and these will definitely add work. On the other hand, a very nicely done paludarium can look really awesome.

Thanks for your repliesif iam going to make one..it must be a simple version.i will make a slope or shelf.by using styrofoam i can make any disired shapes, rocks and gravel can be glued on to the surface for a natural apperance. The tank will be a 55g and it will be like this:70% openwater and 30% dry land. What i would like to have is fiddler crabs, mudskipppers, archerfish, pictus catfish and four-eyed anableps
I have to study more of this subject..i don't think is going to be easy but i will certainly try it out
Some say it's not that difficult to maintain..that depends really on how you want it.
Superlion..thank you for your suggestion about that book..i will try to get it

You'll need a larger tank than that to house those fish.

I wouldn't keep skippers with anything else. They really just need to be kept in a species tank. It's possible to keep a small one with crabs, but they'll eat the crabs if they can fit them in their mouths...

unless your information is based on experience then im not going to believe you people on this board tend to stretch the truth every single website book and magazine recommends them as great tank mates

I was also thinking about setting up a tank like this. What I want to do is have an all frog tank. I'd have some ADFs for the water. And then some other type of frog for the land. Depending on how large of a tank, I'd actually find some room for some fish.

I've actually seen a 4" skipper eat a fiddler crab. They will go after fingers, crickets, fish, other skippers, whatever moves. They're not aggressive, but they're territorial and always hungry, so putting a ton of fish in with them will only end up with someone losing out.

You really have to be careful about what books and magazines say sometimes; just because something's in print doesn't necessarily make it true. I've seen lots of misinformation in several of the hobbyist magazines, especially. My guess is the people who write articles on compatibility are largely gauging things off water quality requirements and not actual experience.

Oh, and I do have lots of direct experience with mudskippers. Ask the one sitting in the tank next to my desk... you don't have to respond to my advice like that. Simply asking where I got the information would have sufficed.

Talk to some of the people at your lfs, as they sell premade tanks just for this type of setup. Some are long and at one end, they have a big square cut in them, so you can place a HOB filter and it will be in the water properly. While some others are tall, with a fake rock wall, with small water falls trickling down through several little puddles. Very cool looking, and you can add live plants to them as well.
Check this one out;

I had a setup like this. I got a plastic river setup that had a nice little filter set right into the thing. you could make the land mass any size you wanted with extentions to the "river" which was just the pump outlet running down a waterfall and following a short river to the aquarium side. I had some baby painted turtles in it with a couple of tree frogs... the only fish I put in it though were feeder fish they seemed to enjoy the water for the little amount of time they were there
