I wouldn't go with the rainbows, personally. They are schooling fish, and I don't think they'd show themselves off best with just a pair.

They shade the glow of it with their mossy-misty costumes,
They wear masks of silk, porcelain, brass, and silver,
So as not to mislead with their own, ordinary faces.

Rather than buying something new I ended up moving my betta coccina into the tank.

Theresa, did you ever decide which "red" fish to add to your tank?

I have seen a red gourami (not a sunset dwarf) but a true RED one in a store in Rochester, MN.

I've got a fever... and the only prescription... is more cowbell!

I would say a lace gourami, but it looks like you have about stocked that tank.

A pair of Honey Gouramies - Colisa Chuna. They don't look much in the shop but the male will turn a deep red with a black throat.

Just the right size for your tank and very peaceful

Some Killifish, forgotten the name, maybe Gardineri, have red polkadots.

Some varities of Apistos have good red coloring. Have my eye here a pair for sale myself.

I noticed the idea of rainbowfish has come up. I agree that Irian Reds are way too big for a 20g, I have seen adult ones, and wouldnt even be tempted in such a small tank. May I suggest though, the beautiful, peaceful, small, and wonderful, Threadfin rainbowfish!

What about a reddish toned paradise fish, they are some of my favorite. The males are prettier but the females can be a little calmer and more peaceful.

I wouldn't put red irian rainbowfish in a 20. But I have some in my 55 gallon. While I've heard they don't show their best color in pairs, that hasn't been my experience. I started with a pair to see how they'd do in my high-pH water, and as the male grew, he turned a beautiful glowing red, even though he was only showing off for a lone female. I've had him a couple years, and that's never changed. In fact, the other males are dimmer -- I think they don't want to compete with the alpha male in the tank.

Not sure of the number of other fish, as far as your biological filter goes. But yes they can do fine in pairs, but do better with 3-5 fish. If you have the room, my best suggestion is the Preacox. As they stay realitively small, and are very flashy. 4-5 of these fish will look awesome in that tank.

I have something of a red themed tank:

-cherry barbs
-belted barbs
-WCMMs
-exclamation point rasboras
-pygmy cories

I'm looking for a centerpiece fish that would get along with the current stock, and I'm trying to find something red. The only thing I can think of would be a betta, but I've had terrible luck with both males and females this past year.

Any ideas?

Yep, I kinda did think that Tim, but hey I breed mine in a 29 gal. lol. But you know me, over kill with the water changes and such. If you look closely though, I highly recommend the others over the incisis. lol Just the incisis is much more available, so it would give a good idea of the others.

IMO, I must say, Tim is absolutely correct, and I must recanter my suggestion for the incisis.

Sorry Tim, have to go against the idea of rosy barbs in a 20, just not enough swimming room in there for them :%), besides IMO they're more piiiiink than red .

I was going to suggest what acid suggested, get something to ofset and compliment the red theme, I'm sure I could make a useful suggestion if I was semi awake and not on a sugar/caffiene high .

For a center piece in that tank, I would probably go with something other than red, just to off set the balance some. Because on big red center piece will take away from the rest of the red in the tank. A contrast however, will not only be a center piece, but will bring out the red of the other fishes and such.

But, if you really want to stay red, try a pair of so of red Rainbows. They will be fine in a 20 gal. There are several red ones to choose from;

The red with some gold mixed in are called "Red Rainbows" or Glossolepis incisus. They get rather large for rainbows, and would be OK in your tank, but I would suggest no more than a pair. Both the female and males are the same color, something rare within the rainbows.

An all red rainbow with no gold, and nothing but red, is called "The Millenium Rainbowfish", or Glossolepis pseudoincisus. This is a better choice if than the red rainbow mentioned, as it is a smaller fish, and it is a much more brilliant red. With these fish you could have several in a 20 gal tank, just nicely.

There is another rainbow that is mostly silver with a bunch of zig zag red lines running horizontally, which is known as the, go figure, lol, "Zig Zag Rainbowfish", or Glossolepis dorityi.

There is one of the smaller or dwarf Rainbows that is metalic blue and has red fins, called the "Neon Rainbowfish" or Melanotaenia praecox. This one IMO, would be the best choice, as it has brilliant red fins, and a nice metalic shiny blue body, that will compliment and off set the other colors to be a center piece. And again, you can keep several of these in that tank of yours.

HTH.....
