It's good that you returned the gouramis (which really look nice anyways), because that tank was overstocked with them in it. You really don't have a lot of space in that tank, and few fish options. I recommend adding another neon tetra or two, and adding either a betta, or a pearl gourami. Both of these fish look nice, and are (generally) quite peaceful. The reason I suggest adding more neons is because they are schooling fish, and need the company. They are best kept in groups of at least six.

I wouldn't put a pearl gourami in a 10. They're a bit on the large size, especially if you have a school of neons in there as well. You could go with a trio of small livebearers like guppies or platies, or a betta as mentioned, or three or four otocinclus cats (good for algae) or another smallish centerpiece fish.

I'd go with a blue ram. Character and beauty. The neon tetra's will help to bring the colour of the ram out. Mine is absolutely the coolest fish when it comes to colour - out of the ones I have anyway.

hmm i agree that a pearl probably wouldnt be a great idea for a 10 gallon even though they're not particularly active they get pretty big. here are a couple of ideas

-how about a couple sparkling gouramis
-a ram or similar sized cichlid
-a couple of male fancy guppies
-a pair of cherry barbs

hmmm not sure what else I will keep thinking

edit: btw sparkling gouramis are much smaller than dwarf gouramis, i dont know whether you know anything about them or not. they are less colorful but much flashier. i wouldnt keep more than 1 dwarf gourami in a 10 gallon but i think you could have 2 or 3 sparklings...
