ok, so i originally thought I would just do a typical community in the 20 gallon i'm setting up for my mom, but now I am thinking I would like to do some sort of community including either a pair of shellies or a dwarf puffer or 2. what kinds of community fish could mix with these in a 20 gallon?

edit: for people just reading this, I have basically ditched the puffer and shellie ideas but I am still looking for ideas and stuff. maybe some larger schoolers. read on for some of my ideas help me out

Neolamprologus and Lamprologus need hard water... 8.0 is optimal... Which will knock out almost all the tetras, and most barbs are too large for a 20g.

The dwarf puffers will chase and kill just about anything that won't eat them first.

Both of these fish do well in a species tank and are not generally suitable for a community aquarium.

yeah thats what i thought, but I've also heard a few people say they have kept them in community-type settings quite well, so I guess I was wondering what those people had been able to keep them with

A pair of, say, N. brevis would do fine with platies or danios above, both of which will be quite happy in the hard, basic water. However, you'd be better off leaving it a species tank - a 20, whether tall or long, is a pretty low tank to separate bottom and top dwellers.

Meleagris, definitely not - they're too easily stressed by tankmates, IME.
Occies, not a good idea - they have a lot of attitude and pack a punch.
Caudos, probably not - as you said they're a larger shellie, and would really need a 20 all to themselves.

if dwarf puffers are too agressive, what are peoples opinions on a figure 8 puffer? could one of those go in a community setting?

fig8 puffers are not really community fish either. and not to mention that they are brackish as well.

ok thanks... hmmm im trying to think, what are some interesting/unique fish that I could put in the 20 gallon that would be more compatible? perhaps a school of larger fish... does anyone know much about giant danios? I have never kept danios of any kind before.

edit: I also saw some boesemanis rainbows at the fish store, would a school of these work? they are expensive though...

edit #2: oh and what would be good with rosy barbs? could i do like 6 rosy barbs or would that be full up?
