i thought the reason why fish schooled was so they would appear to be one big fish. so to acheive a true school of any tropical fish would it be best to have a large non-aggresive fish to make them school? or will they school no matter what?

They will school no matter what but in freshwater aquariums don't expect them to always face the same way.

Not likely!
It will only stress them out.

[font color="#000080"]The answer is, the only reason "most" fish do school is because they don't feel safe so they get close together and school.

e.g Having a tank with only tetras in it. At first they don't feel safe so they school, but after a while they get comfortable and realise there's nothing to fear so they start to spread apart and not school. None of my tetras school anymore.

PJ is right.

All my WCMM's and serpe tetras dont school anymore.

They kinda school, but it is mainly a scattered big bunch of the tetras.

putting in a larger fish will cause them to school. im creating a 75g with alot of shoaling fish like cards/neons/black neons/rainbows so im putting in a angelfish, yes an angelfish, with them to make sure they allways shoal
but wont the angel eat alot of them? no before you start ranting you have to look at this realisticly. place the small fish in 1st. by the time you place the last small fish in the 1st are prolly allready doubled in size. now add the angel when hes still small. by the time the angel grows up the other fish are all full size. i have some full size neons if you think you can get a angel to tackle a fullsize one i would love to watch. be like me eating a hamburger in one bite.
