I have a 29g that is very well planted, and has been setup for about 6 months now. I currently have 2 dwarf gourami, and a few ghost shrimp in the tank. I will be giving my girlfriend the dwarfs in a month or 2, and want to redo this tank. I want it semi to very aggressive, but don't know what exactly I want to get. I don't want cichlids, that's all I know. I would like to get a RTBS, but I'm not sure if that's too big for the tank, or what will go with it. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

Maybe a Leopard Ctenopoma? Not very aggressive, but highly predatory.

Agressive, but no cichlids, hmmmm. Well I would definately add a loach which will go agressive when kept in an agressive tank and that is the skunk loach. He can hold his own LOL .

If you are looking for an agressive Tetra Black skirts are nippy as all get out but then with the long fins and attitude they might have issues with those loaches.

I guess that will be your issue findingfish that work together and still give youyour agressiveness. Make sure to grab a territorial pleco like a full grown bristlenose male. He'll keep everyone from settling into his area too much!

Empty chairs at empty tables, the room silent, forlorn.

I agree that the RTBS get too big for a 29. Tiger barbs would be a good addition though. In a 29, it's hard to have semi aggressive-aggressive since they need their territory. Also, many get large. Meh, it is your choice.

They shade the glow of it with their mossy-misty costumes,
They wear masks of silk, porcelain, brass, and silver,
So as not to mislead with their own, ordinary faces.

I have tiger barbs in my 60g tank. I was thinking of maybe doing a species tank with the tigers in the 29. I was looking at the black skirt tetras, they always catch my eye in the lfs. The main reason I don't want cichlids is that they are hard to find in my area. The only ones I can find get way to big for my 29g.(oscars, jack dempseys, & texas) I was looking at getting a Ram for this tank, but nobody carrys them. A convict would get too big wouldn't it? Thanks for the responses, and please keep them coming

I'm not too into Cichlids, so I can't really help you too much with the Convict question, but I can tell you that Tiger Barbs and Skunk Loaches would definitely be a setup for a rather aggressive tank...

Instead of Black skirt Tetras though, I'd go with Serpae Tetras. The skirts that make the Black skirts what they are are PRIME for getting destroyed by Tiger Barbs or any other nippy fish...

Unfortunately, most of the aggressive fish that fit in a 29 gallon will only be classified as nippy by most of us. Also, if I'm correct, Serpae is Latin for "Fish that hates all other fish and thinks it's ten feet tall and bulletproof" They're widely regarded as one of the most, if not THE most, aggressive tetra there is...

As for the Convict, I think they would get JUST a tiny bit too big, and same with something like a Firemouth...

PM/email/msg me if you have any questions/comments regarding me or my knowledge or if you want me to read a thread.

A pair of convicts would fit in your 29. Just keep in mind they will be the only fish in the tank and they could have lots and lots of babies.

An article on convicts:

Convicts wouldn't work. I read the article, and it said they will destroy live plants, and my tank is fairly heavily planted. The skunk loaches and serpae tetras look like a good idea though. Thanks for the responses.
