hi! i recently started a killifish breeding project, and have 2 pairs of aphyosemion australes, 1 pair of aphyosemion cognicum, 1 pair of fundulopanchax bivataenium and 1 pair of aphyosemion scheeli...

i have them each set up in their own tanks with bare bottom, some silk plants, driftwood and a breeding mop made out of dark green wool.

they've been set up for about 2 weeks... the only thing i'm wondering is: are the eggs visable with the naked eye, or should i use a magnifying glass? will they lay them on the outer parts of the mop, or right in the middle?

thanks for your help!

i was scared to disturb the mops... but it's okay to take them out? i wasn't sure how "durable" the eggs were.

how should i look for them? strand by strand? or are they pretty noticeable?

u can take them out.. and the eggs are pretty durable so don;t worry about them.. just pick and poke through the mop until u find them and remove them to a container to hatch them. or just move the whole mop in general if there is alot of eggs and replace it with a new mop for the adults to spawn in

please keep me updated if u find any eggs... and p.s. what kind of killies are they?

thanks for the help! i'm new to the killifish thing, but i'm really enjoying them so far.

i have 5 aphyosemion australes: 2 females and 3 males (both spotless and orange varieties). they're in a 29 G community tank with some rams, checkered barbs, and a loach.

i also have a pair of aphyosemion cognicum and a pair of aphyosemion bivitattum "Ojibu Ode" which are in a 10G divided in half with one pair on each side. the tank has a bare bottom, some silk plants, and a breeding mop for each pair. it is run by a powerfilter and kept at a pH of about 7.0 and a temp of about 76F

finally i had a pair of aphyosemion scheeli, but the male recently died oh well, i hope to find another one at this month's aquarium club meeting.

how does this set up sound to you?

my aphyosemion bivitattum laid eggs!!

there were about a dozen on the mop when i looked yesterday!
so, i took them off and put them into a breeding net (for livebearers) hanging in the tank that the parents are in. so, apparently they will hatch in about 2 weeks.

yeah! i'm excited!

congrats on the spawn.. i too am fairly new to killies but have researched alot over the last 6 months on it.. god bless the internet.. great looking killies you have. one thing to suggest.. do you have any access to javamoss??? if you do maybe add some of that to the breeder net for when the fry hatch they can swim around eating the microscopic food within the moss

i am more into the anuals at the moment, notho's to be more specific. actually setting up some nothos to spawn now.. and wetting some other eggs to get some new fry.. ohh what a thrill it has been going through the processes with these killies.

u will have to keep me updated on the progress of your killies and the fry.

p.s.
where do u live???

yeah, i'm really enjoying the killis too! i don't know why they're not more popular, really. there seems to be this mysterious stigma surrounding them.

good luck with the nothos, they're supposed to be one of the better ones to begin with.

i do have some java moss... that's a good idea to put it in with the fry, i never thought of that.

i live in abbotsford, bc (a town an hour east of vancouver) where are you from?
