I've had terra cotta in my 29g for quite some time but last night disaster struck. Before putting pots in the tank I cut the bottom hole larger and file down the edges. No problems all this time, fish love the hiding places. But apparently my female paradisefish had never ventured into one of the smaller pots, or maybe she'd just grown...poor thing got stuck and died I found her this morning, really upset and I can't help feeling guilty

Yikes
From what I've read (never used pots myself) the smallest hole should be larger than your largest fish....just to make sure that they'll never get stuck.

Sorry about your loss Theresa, accidents do happen so don't feel too bad. Good advice too!

That was the case when I first put in the pots but unfortunately I neglected to take growth into consideration.

So sorry. I would definitely try to keep up with the growth of your fish. Maybe you could just forget the pots and put in live rock making hiding places yourself.

I'm actually a fan of filling holes with silicone with larger fish, unless they arent ever going to try to get thru.

For animals, the entire universe has been neatly divided into things to (a) mate with, (b) eat, (c) run away from, and (d) rocks. - Terry Pratchett

I'm sorry about the tragic loss of your fish. I had something similar happen with a goldfish tank when I was much younger. I had a ceramic cave and one fish got stuck in it, fortunately my mother looked in just as it happened and was able to break the ceramic apart and save the fish. The fish was a bit banged up from the ordeal, but was fine otherwise. I learned from my near tragic experience and do not have anything in my new tropical tank but artificial plants. The fish seem to do just fine to hide in the plants and they seem much safer.
