As these fish grow to 6" they will require a 90g tank for all 3.

i know that the lfs said that i was to get three and let two pair up then take the other one back . so the other two will be going into a 36"x18"x18". Would it be okey to add some bog wood to the tank or will that mess up the pH?
The pH just now is 8.0 if that helps any and the puffers them selfs are only 1"

Don't trust any info from your LFS. For two spotted puffers, you will need at least a 55gal.They are very territorial and need about 30gal each. You won't need bogwood. The Ph will be fine as long as it doesn't fluctuate much.

Don't be concerned about "pairing" your puffers, unless you are looking for 2 that are compatable. They won't breed anyway. Even so, they may fight after they get older. You just can't tell with puffers!
