i recently picked up a sunfish (don't know what type, but definately of the genus Lepomis). They're a good size and makes a really good feeder fish for a pretty large marbled sleeper goby. anyway - does anyone have any experience breeding these guys? i figured they'd be easy to deal with cause they're coldwater (so i don't really have to go out and pick up another heater for a tank...) any info on breeding/sexing would be great!

They spawn rather like cichlids with the male making a nest in the gravel. Here is a couple of links to articles that may get you started with them:

Personally, I would have chosen a small tilapia species or convict cichlid if seeking a source of feeder fry as I think they may be easier.

Yes, convicts or even guppies are the quicker and much easier way to go, if feeders are what you are wanting to produce.

thanks - i got about 8 kribs (they were in the 'feeder fish' tank at the lfs so they were only 59 cents each) i'm trying to breed those because i hear they breed relatively easily... i had a pair of convicts, but one died unexpectedly and (believe it or not...) they weren't breeding. i was just wondering if the sunfish would be easy to breed because they are pretty cheap at the lfs. i'll probably end up sticking to the kribs though. thanks again!
