I recently aquired some threadfin rainbowfish, but they look like their colors could be better. I can see hints of color in them that look like they could be improved upon... my question is does anyone have any tips for improving their color? as far as diet and stuff?

also, right now I only have 3 of them with the intention of getting more... they are in a 10 gallon which eventually I would like to get a pair of blue rams for, so it would be just the rams and rainbowfish. how many should I get? I know they are not really a schooling fish (i think) but how many more rainbows do you think would be good to finish off the stocking on this tank? I wish i could fit an oto in there for algae but i think that would totally max out my bioload.

Another otto would be fine, as they bio load is next to nil. As for more rainbows, yes you could add several more of the threadfins. As for the color and such, are they male or females? The males will have the longer fins, and the females will have shorter fins and much less colors. Foods, well I am partial to the high quality foods, such as frozen brine, crushed Tetra Pro tropical crisps, and live foods, such as white worms, daphnia, ect. All these will help increase the colors of these fish tremendously. They will spawn easily on spawning mops and live plants. The raising of the fry are what is difficult.

HTH......

Thanks, I went to the fish store today and got 3 more so now I have 6 of them The 3 that I had before have been showing more and more color every day, i see why they call them rainbowfish! they have tones of red, blue, and yellow.

I am really liking these guys

Not sure if they are M or F yet though because I think some of them are juveniles. Is it hard to tell? by looking at them right now I would say 4M/2F

I will pick up some more various food items next time I am at the fish store, right now all i've got is nutrafin color flakes and freeze dried bloodworms.

oh hardy, my favorite term heheh. think my lfs has the yellow fin version of it. seemed pretty active but the fins are NO WHERE near the length of some of the pics ive seen. they were tiny but not sure if full grown or juvies, prolly juvies. hard to tell with small fish lol not much difference between a few mms lol.

Btw. ( reason for edit ) thanks for the info guys, it lead me to some good info.
