i recently bought a new larger tank (around 50 gal or 200L) and i need some new fish!!! currently in the tank i have-
10 neons (recently added 5)
6 hockey stick/ penguin tetras (newly added)
3 pristella tetras
3 rummy noses
3 male BNs (planning to get rid of two and get one female)
3 clown loaches(had a snail problem and fell in luv wit em)

i plan to increase the rest of my schools to 6 each but how much more could i put in it?? i bought a canister filter when i got it and it pumps 1500ltrs an hour and the guy at the LFS recomended it for the tank and ive got a 300 watt stainless heater. any ideas??

Hi Fan Fan, I think the general rule is 1 in of fish per sq ft of water. That would be roughly 55 inches of fish.

Some one clarify that if you can cuz I'm pretty green myself!

A nice fish to answer your subject? I like mollies so far for a beginner. Or a Betta.

I'm glad you know to fill out your schools. All the tetras should probably be in groups of 6+. That goes with clowns too usually. Clowns get very big and should eventually grow out of your 50 gallon. Do you have plans to move them to another tank? If not, you might want to bring them back and get a nice shoal of cories instead. They are great bottom scavengers and can be very entertaining. Are you interested in a center piece fish, such as a gourami or something?

Oh, and that guideline is one inch of ADULT fish per gallon in FW, but it should not be followed most of the time. For example, a 6 inch oscar or pleco will have a much heaver effect on the bio load than 6 one inch neons will.

I would wait about 6 weeks before adding any more fish, as your tank needs to cycle...

I'm not your neighbor, you Bakersfield trash.

the tank is already cycled, and im not exactly a begginer. ive had fish since i was about 11, so thats around 5 years. with the clown loaches the dud at my lfs, i prob shudnt listen to em! told me that the clown loaches would be alright in my tank as they are very slow growers, and by the time they get too big i beleive i shud have a larger tank. so would gouramis go with the rest of my fish?? i think i just need a larger more peaceful fish (or 2) as a ceterpeice.

I think you could probably add a larger gourami, pearls are exceptionally nice!
You should have enough time to grow your clowns out a bit before you move them.
Rainbowfish are also nice, you could look into a nice rainbowfish or two! I espescially like the turqouise dwarf(praecox) rainbowfish, and the irian reds, and ornates.

Princess, Giant Goramy get too large for the average aquaria. A 50g tank is not large enough as this fish will reach almost 2 feet in length easily, and probably much larger. I wouldnt put 1 in less than a 180g tank, and maybe not even then....

Hehe, Colisa fasciata (the species princess actually named), the Banded Gourami, used to be called the Giant Gourami. It gets like 3". I don't see no "Osphronemus goramy" in her post.

I think two would be alright. Gourami's are generally cheap (as i bought my gold gouramis for $4.00 each.)
