Not goldfish not goldfish not goldfish.

Comets get to be 2 feet long and fancy goldfish get to the the size of grape fruits... Both wayyyyy to large for a 20g.

There are quite a few things you can keep in a 20 gallon. Why don't you go to your LFS, and write a list of the fish you see and like? Then we can help you build a good stock list. It is really hard to give you ideas if we don't know what you like.

They shade the glow of it with their mossy-misty costumes,
They wear masks of silk, porcelain, brass, and silver,
So as not to mislead with their own, ordinary faces.

I like cichlids so aggression is a relative thing. Rams are cool looking, colorful and not really very aggressive.

Shellies, though I've never kept them, have some nice colors and have some cool behavior and I think are pretty peaceful.

Platties are very colorful but IMO not very interesting. Now before the uproar starts that is only my opinion and not a statement of fact.

Cories do alot of interesting things but not too colorful.

Dwarf Gouramis have some amazing colors but I feel about them like I do Platties.

But if it were me, I'd go with Apistogramma Cacatouides triple red. But that's just me.

Have fun, Mike

You could set up a basic community tank...centerpiece fish, such as a dwarf gourami; schooling fish, tetras or maybe harlequin rasboras; kuhli loaches or cories for the bottom.

A livebearer tank-platies, guppies, or Endler's-either a mix of M/F or all males for color.

There are a few options for cichlids, take a look at [link=this link]http://www.cichlid-forum.com/articles/cookie_cutter_20g.php" style="COLOR: #336699[/link] for some ideas.

My suggestion:

2 German rams
7 cardinal/rummynose tetras (though cards are hardier, and more active)
6 small cories (like pandas)
1 bristlenose

Maybe a little overstocked, but a nice tank in my opinion. There is a mix of colorful fish (the rams and tetras), cool fish (the bristlenose), and active, interesting fish (all of them). I think that the above tank is a super good idea, but of course I do. I suggested it!

Seriously though, cruise a fish store or the profiles on this site, and see what interests you. Then, just post back here with your ideas!

Do not get a live bearer tank wiht guppies. Tehy are such right pains. every month a new disease somes into the tnak. I don't know how since I quarantine them, i think it comes throught hte water. Guppies are amazingly supsectible to parasites. So are other live bearers. Go with a bristle nsoe catfish, they are extremely hardy. they lived through every disease in my tank: gill flukes, velvet, dropsy, anonymous worms and camallanus. Apart from 1 guppy they were the only fish that survived everything.
I'd go with what sirbooks said, maybe a little overstocked, but with good filteration and a good maintenance routine it should be fine.

If you do decide to go with tetras and/or cories, be aware that they should be kept in large groups. Tetras are schooling fish, and do best when kept in groups of six or more. Cories are shoaling fish, but they also do best in numbers of at least six.

Just remember if you're mixing male and females platies (or any livebearer) to keep a ratio of at least 1M/2F.
