Other dwarf cichlids, pencilfish, hatchetfish, maybe raphael catfish (I don't know whether they eat smaller tankmates), discus, etc. There are quite a few other fish you could keep. What size tank do you have? If we know that, we can narrow down the choices some.

Sirbooks he said he had a 42gallon tank. Angelfish and discus would probably be best considering they could be a new centerpiece fish but these fish do get big and with discus you would what him to have a few friends so i kinda wouldnt recommend discus as then your tank would be over stocked. Angels dwarf cichlids and hatches would all be nice what do you want to get

Whoops, sorry, I guess I missed that. With all of those other fish, I wouldn't go with discus or the raphael catfish. Angelfish would be okay, but I'd go with some smaller fish, like some of the ones I mentioned.

I'm not sure about the angelfish. They just seem to be rather fickle fish-- some people can keep them with neons, and some go on homicides, like mine did.

As for dwarf cichlids, any of the apistogramma would do well, I'd wager.

Yeah, apistos or more rams would be fine. Since you didn't ask about rams though, I'm guessing you only want one.

Most apistos are peaceful (though this will depend on the personality of each individual fish), and they will get along with the fish in that (planned or actually set up?) tank. Apistogramma cichlids are pretty neat. Just about any species would suffice, if memory serves me correctly.

Apistogramma Cacautoides, A. Borelli, Kribs, or angels would be fine. Avoid I tend to lean away from the kribs (I know they're Africa), because if they breed, the ram will be dead most likely. One that's more difficult to find, but are great little fish are Laetacara genus.

I second Pencilfish. You could put a nice school of them in there. I had the kind with a single white line and a black line below it. Their fins turn bright red when they flirt!!! Beautiful little fish. I look forward to the day when I have room to house quite a few of these little guys. (maybe when my school of glowlights grows old and passes on).
Any other smaller tetra would be fine. Marbled Hatchetfish would be an excellent choice.
As Sirbooks stated a dwarf cichlid would work well. I think Keyholes may work for you as well, but ask someone else as I havent kept them before.
Also, Rasboras of any type would work well, so would a livebearer such as mollys, guppys, or swordtails.
Just make sure you g et all males or females to avoid babies.
