my old upstairs neighbor gave me their used 10g tank when they moved out, complete with gravel, filter and heater. then my friend gave me his 30g long tank once i had the 10g going for a few months. and now i'm looking for a 100g+ tank which i have absolutely no room for in my house

i got my first fish tank when i was about 14 years old and just started keeping fish! i wasnt passionate about it (nor did i know much about fish keeping!) i think i just liked it because i liked fishing

only within the past year have i started to keep fish seriously, it started just as a hobby to do in my spare time, and now because im studying at university (and HATE it!) id much rather attend to my fish then study and so it has turned into an addiction :%) ...... but i can stop if it gets too outa hand.... anytime....whenever i feel like it..... :%)

My dad had a 55g built into our basement wall, I was always interested in it. I don't remember a lot of details, but he always had angels, neons and black mollies.

When I was 15 I bought my first betta, kept them off & on for years.

21 years later my husband bought me a 29g kit as a surprise Christmas gift, fish addict ever since

What got me started when I was little: I just thought fish were neat. Of course I did it all wrong. I didn't have any fish until years later...

What got me started again: I started dating racso. Then I joined FP and got a betta for my dorm room. About a year later my mom was GIVEN a 55g, stand, filter, heaters, and lights. All we had to buy was gravel, a few decorations, and fish.

Now, I'm addicted

Boss wanted "more life in the office" .

Then I found out she had 3 goldfish in a small tulip planter on her dining room table.

Boss got me started, fish rescue kept me going :%).

It started off with a 5 gallon tank left over with a science fair project...curiosity kinda took over from there...and now I'm planning a 75 gallon reef. go figure...why don't aquariums come with a warning level:

Dr. Wellfish Says:
Fishkeeping is addictive and expensive! Be warned...

EDIT: now that I think about it, I got even more addicted after a few rescues too.

Had a 20 gal goldfish tank as a teen. Got away from it for over 10 years, until someone my fiance and I knew gave us a spare 75 gallon tank and stand they had. I went nuts buying all the other necessities to run the tank. Set it up April 2004 and so far so good. I only lost 1 fish all this time, which was a mechanical accident. Still have 15 fish, most are small except for the 2 common plecos (one is over 6 inches already).

just wondering how everyone got started in the hobby of fish.. everyone has their own story.

mine is .. one of my friends gave me a fish tank (a lil 5 gal with the bio wheel and everything) and i had a brilliant idea to build a stand for it out of bawls bottles... after i did that i thought i should stock it... and then i just started to like the fish

My Husband!!!!!!!

He had a fish tank while he was young and quit the hobby in college. Then he got started again at fish keeping while we were still dating and I was most charmed by all the little angel fish he kept.

We started with a 2 1/2 feet tank and now we have a 79 gal tank. I am thinking of a 250 gallon tank that we will have to buy a new house for.

My dad has kept fish for over 25 years now.

We had a 55g set up in my basement, and i always liked it.

We needed to do senior projects, and this one girl said she was gonna do a saltwater tank setup. I said "Hey, I have a FW tank, and i will just take pictures of it, and say i made it"

Well, i wrote it down, and now iv got my own tank, that im gonna do for the project.

i got a 10 gallon about 12 years ago after my grade 6 class got a class aquarium. kept that one for about 8 years off and on. then in 2000, one of the lfs had a 33gallon kit for sale, i got my dad to make me a stand and kept it for various types of fish. i've always loved fish, but never got really into the hobby till this year when my boyfriend saw my tank and wanted on of his own! he got a 10g, but decided it was too small, and 'upgraded' to a 29, 33, and finally a 55 within about 2 months . seeing his excitement as he chose fish for all these tanks got me going again! unfortunately, now i have 2 tanks (33 and 55) and he has 4 (10, 29, 33, 55). not fair!! i started this hobby first

When I was 15 my step-dad kept asking me what i wanted for my birthday. I had always loved aquariums and my friend jokingly said, "get her a fishtank" We joked about it but secretly i wanted it so badly! So when i got home from school that day there was a fishtank with all the accesories sitting on my bed with a bow!

I first started keeping fish about a year ago (one betta) because my roommate at college had one and I thought he was just the neatest thing. Flash forward one year, and I decided to get a bigger tank, a 29 gallon, because the guy downstairs in our apartment complex had a 17 gallon and I really liked what it added to the apartment. I also got it thinking it would help me destress from school and work. Now, three months later, I'm preparing to get a 55 gallon for Christmas and absolutetly cannot wait to give my dojos a new home!

Finding Nemo ! My daughter watched that movie and wanted a fish for Christmas so off we went to the fish store for ... ahem... one bowl, one fish. Uh huh. Fast forward not quite one year, we have the original 2 gallon, a 10 gallon, 20 gallon and 30 gallon.

My mom still chants... one bowl, one fish... then laughs hysterically.

As long as I can remember my dad has always had a tank with neons. I remember getting caught watching them instead of the tv when we had family movies. I've been keeping fish of my own off and on since I was about 6. Taking care of all the things needing to be done including testing and illness identification. When we moved we got away from fish until last spring I decided t obuy some cute little guppies... I went from a 10 gal with 4 guppies to eight 10gals, two 20gals, one 38gal, two 55gals, two 75gals, a 5 gal, a 2 gal, and countless betta bowls. Our total fish count was last counted at approxamately 350 fish!! :%)
