it's empty but completely cycled. I used to have young african cichlids but i moved them up into my 55 gallon.

It's set up for cichlids, complete with plenty of hiding places, caves, and sand. I just don't know what else i'd be able to stock in there permanantly. i've tried community fish in the past and i've kinda out-grown that. i just want something interesting.

any advice?

Go with some of the small shell dwellers if you've already got it set up for cichlids .

In my 20 I have white skirt tetras, danios, and WCMMs...a random stocking but the tetras needed a home .

Do you want cichlids again? Some South American cichlids would be happy in a 20 (dwarf cichlids, rams, keholes etc.). A pair of kribs could work too (but they are from Africa).

If it were my tank, I would get an african butterfly fish. They can't really be trusted with most top or mid level swimmers, so they could go with an interesting bottom feeder. Try to find a shoal of not-so-common cory or loach. I have a feeling less run-of-the-mill fish will keep you interested.

There are lots of great Tanganyikans and riverine Africans (not to mention dwarf CA/SAs) that would love a cavey tank and sand.

But allow me to cast my vote for either color (Neolamprologus leleupi, the stunning "Lemon Yellow" cichlid) or pattern (any of the beautiful Julidochromis species; I'm a particular fan of J. transcriptus). With either species you could have a fun little colony going - that's years of entertainment and interaction.

dwarf cichlids sound interesting...especially the ones from Lake Tanganyikan.

and what do you mean by "colony"? do they breed and the entire extended family help raise the fry?

i'm interested in shell dwellers as well.

it's just that i don't know how available either cichlids are in my area

I would go with rams. And some other dwarf cichlids. And a few ottos to keep the tank clean. Shell dwellers are great fish but are sometimes hard to find. If you are willing to buy fish off the internet that will widen your range quite a bit HTH a bit fish1

Got it in one - they breed and the family raises the fry together. Start with a pair (well, start with six, let them pair, remove 4) and each spawn will help raise the next.
Call stores and ask about the fish you're interested in, that should give you a good starting point.

You could go with some Rams, there are a few different varieties out there to choose from.
Also a puffer could be another consideration.
