Question to raise is, what kind of set up would you have in your tank? Everything covered from filters, gravel, plants, to fish. It would be interesting to hear some of the experience out there give some good inputs. |

Did you return some of them to give your tank a chance to properly cycle? Back to your original question about what to do with your 35g hex... presuming that you are completely starting over with this tank... I would think that a 35g hex, since it is so tall, would be a wonderful home for an angel (maybe a pair, don't have them myself so not sure if 2 would be comfy??) I also don't know how easy/hard they are to care for so you might want to do a bit more research if you decide on them. Along with the angels maybe a school of cory cats would be very nice... I prefer albinos and peppered, myself. Anyhow, good luck... HTH, Beth p.s. tried to make a link up there but couldn't get it to work... sorry but you'll have to copy & paste. This is purely a question to see what people would do with this tank if they had one. Since I've had my tank for about 2 weeks now, I have found that it is harder to care for than a traditional tank. Since its 24 inches high and not much surface area to cover, its hard to judge what fish to have and how much. This one is challenging, but the benifit of having it is the area of my house. It doesn't take up that much room. I have two plants that are almost 20 inches in length. This way the fish will maybe want to swim around at all levels of the tank. My fluval 104 is working out well, with bio max in 2 of the 3 upper baskets. I'm thinking that I could convert my pengiun 550 into a ugf, but I'm not too sure thats a good idea since I have live plants. |

Also, most ppl do not recommend UGF's at all, with or with out plants. And 2 20-inch plants is a good start... we started out with just a couple of inexpensive short ones but with the proper light and care we have enough to plant 2 smaller tanks and give some away. Anyhow, like I said before, if I were to get a hex I would do angels... I think they'd be very pretty. (Just don't add any small tetras-they'd be eaten). -Beth |

I would use a sand substrate and do live plants. For Fish I would definetelly get an angelfish since its so tall. Maybe even a pair. Otherwise its up to you. Maybe a school of neon tertra or cardinals would be cool. Then either a Bristlenose pleco, bullnose pleco, or a group of 3 ottos for algae issues. That is what I would do. |

I asked the fish guy at the pet store and he told me that its a freshwater fish. Another thing he said is that it will get as big as an angel. Anyone have any experience with these fish? |

smurf![]() ![]() Hobbyist Posts: 56 Votes: 4 Registered: 16-Jun-2004 ![]() | I've got the same tank - penguin biowheel 330 for the filter, two airstones since the surface area is smaller than a traditional tank, gravel/river rocks for the substrate and recently added an 8" flower pot overflow dish of sand as a sandbox for the cories. For the fish - 4 hatchetfish, 3 white cloud minnows and a gourami which all stay mostly in the top 1/3 of the tank, mollies and cherry barbs for the middle and a SAE and cory's for the bottom. A note about the cory's - they will go to the top of the tank for air on occasion, mine are all at least 1-1/2" long and have not problem with the height. It was recommended to me NOT to go with the smaller cory species like pandas as they may have some difficulty with the height - don't know how true this is but I wanted to be on the safe side. I also have 1 male guppy who is all over the place in the tank. |
pmdaggett![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Enthusiast Posts: 191 Kudos: 169 Votes: 1 Registered: 25-Jul-2004 ![]() | Okay, now that I have my tank cycled, I would like to see what kind of fish I can put in there. Right now I've got 2 2" guoramis 3 1.5" syno. petricolas, 1 3" sultan pleco (L-264) and 4 tiger barbs. I want cichlids to put in there, but I know they'll eat the plants. I thought about taking my barbs out and returning them and adding 3 congo tetras. Then maybe adding another small pleco and 2 cardinal tetras. Does anybody see a problem with this? This is what I would ultimately have: 2 Gold Guoramis 3 Congo Tetras 2 Cardinal Tetras 3 syno. petricolas 1 sultan pleco Thats about 32" of fish in a 35g hex. I think it would look sweet, but not too sure about any problems with that many fish. But I do have my fluval and my power filter to support it I think. |
