I am on Vancouver Island in British Columbia. My LFS told me If I were to get into breeding sliders, they would pay 15 dollars each for inch long babies.

Freakin' kids... my nephew (6) always comes in and taps on all my fishtanks, and insists on seeing my geckoes (which he just wants to squeeze the daylights out of), just to make me mad. They have no respect for animals, and unfortunately, my parents (and his mom) don't care to teach him.

It's a good thing you taught those kids something... and people who want to buy a turtle for a 10 gallon tank. They just look at these cute little turtles and go "aww, I bet he'd be a fun pet" and then get so awestruck when they find out it'll get big and have a taste for small fish...

BY THE WAY: If the turtle is illegal in your state, I wouldn't get too worried. Afterall, the LFS sold it to you... and, I mean, what's gonna happen? Justice League bust in on your door for owning an illegal turtle? Basically, I just don't think you could get in trouble for it... but that's just me, and I'm not always too bright. Do what you're comfortable with.

just last night these kids were throwing rocks at this turtle by the river right under the arch( mississippi river, st. louis, mo) so i gave a little speech on how there protected and its illegal to buy a turtle under 4" in diameter in MO. so i took him home and put him in my 120usg oscar tank.

so many people come into my store asking if we sell and what requirements they need. when ever i tell them what the turtles need, they get upset and leave with a betta in a 10usg that they were going to put the turtle in.

so many people are misled on turtle care, no wonder theyre protected.

Wish-ga, be nice. I'm a teenager, don't be prejudiced. Even all-mighty adults can be mislead. And, parents often AREN'T involved. At least, they aren't in mine.

Try selling the slider on...I dont know...aquabid...? Or maybe an LFS will take it, or a general pet store... look around.

anyone wants to buy a turtle??? I have to get rid of this guy I just read up on it and its illegal to have in my state.

br taylor are you a teen? Sounds it from your posts? I am just wondering if your parents are involved in your decision making? Surely they would be encouraging you to fully research before buying pets so that you know you can provide for them through out their entire life.

If you have to give it away and are out of pocket it will be a lesson in the importance of taking time and effort to research.

Hope you find it an appropriate home.

Oh, I see. I was under the understanding that it was only wild caught specimens of animals, fish, and plants that were outlawed.
I also was told that the Red Ear Slider is a native turtle to BC. I wonder if any of the pet stores actually know they are not legally allowed to sell these turtles, as I have yet to go into a pet store here that doesnt sell them.

Untrue...the legislation that covers wild-caught turtles is the AgCan legislation that prohibits import of turtles and tortoises into Canada for commercial purposes (including petshops), and the other legislation would be the BC wildlife act which prohibits the sale of Western Painted Turtles as a native species. The legislation to which I am referreing was accepted 5 years ago and prohibits the sale of red-eared sliders (which are not a native species, and the government would love to have the feral BC populations eradicated), even though the law is rarely enforced at best.

No actually, recent legislation only prohibits wild caught specimens from being sold. Domestically bred turtles are still legal and available widely.

Interesting....especially as recent BC legislation prohibits pet shops from selling them.

My res's can't catch the tigerbarbs that have been sentenced to live with them, after killing a goldfish in the pond.

you could make quite a bit of money breeding these critters.

Not really....the farms that produce them in the southern US do so by the hundreds of thousands and wholesale the 1"-2" hatchlings for as little as $0.99 each.

Here a red ear slider 1 inch across sells for $49.95ca in every store I have seen!

I have to wonder just where you are....I currently have 14 RESes in my rescue (all between 5"-9", and another 20 waiting to come in, and even with no adoption fee, finding homes for them is near impossible (despite the fact that law prohibits the stores here from selling them).

On another note here,
If you were wanting to keep sliders- or turtles of any cute/pretty/unusual type, and if you didnt mind providing the appropriate home for them, you could make quite a bit of money breeding these critters.

I know turtles are quite expensive to house and care for, but after awhile they would begin to pay themselves off.
I have a great interest in breeding turtles later on in life, when I have more space and time. It would be a fascinating hobby, and the little guys are so cute.
I particularly liked this neat "soft shell turtle" with a long pig-like nose I saw in the store, I would probably try breeding those. Awesome critters.

I try my hardest to convince my customers at work NOT to get these turtles. We get them while they are babies, and they are the cutest things...and people fall in love. It seems that nobody wants to provide them with proper house-ing. I strongly reccomend a 55 gallon tank for an adult. We have several swimming in our koi pond atm...they do get to be a decent size. Very neat guys though. And I wouldn't put any fish with him...unless you want to feed him dinner.

A red ear slider can get to be at least 12 inches in size, and would require much more space than a 10g can give him, I would suggest nothing less than a 33g tank, and preferrably larger

I would suggest nothing short of a 100gallon wide....I usually suggest to most people to obtain a small hard-shell pond liner to build an indoor pond for their RESes.

Ok,
NO. It wont work. First of all, a 10g tank is too small for a Red Ear Slider. This is a nice large size turtle, and will grow far too large for that tank. Also, like most reptiles, he will grow pretty quickly.
Second, you cannot keep any of those fish with your turtle. They will be lunch. I would not trust any fish with a turtle, unless it was significantly larger than the turtle, and no fish of that size will fit in a 10g tank.
