would this work in a 20usg tank?

6 rummynose tetras
3 yoyo loaches
2 cherry barbs
1 pearl gourami

or is this too full? any other ideas including some of these fish? I also like rams, lemon tetras, and pygmy corys so maybe some ideas including these would help. I also like rainbowfish, but i already have some threadfins so I dont want any more of those. and I know its a common suggestion, but I'm not interested in any corys other than pygmys, thanks in advance.

The tank setup you propose would work just fine. The top, middle, and bottom are all occupied.

However, I like this setup better:
10 rummynose tetras
8 pygmy cories
2 German/Bolivian rams

South American fish are my favorites, which is one of the reasons that I like this setup more. Also, this tank would be more colorful (in my opinion), and definitely more interesting and fun to watch.

Your setup is fine but I don't know about
the yo yo loaches.

They like to be in a shoal of 6 or more so they may be
unadvisable. as 3 will get timid when eva you head towards the tank.

I think I will put in at least some plants. some wysteria clippings from my 29gal to get it going, I will plants the shoots from my amazon swordplant in there, they are small right now... some aponos because I love those cheap wal mart bulbs haha not sure what else. maybe I will buy some vals for it or something. if somebody is bored and wants to help me come up with an idea of how to place these plants it would help a lot

as for the fish, I think I am going to stick with the loaches as I have corys in my 29g and have always wanted loaches... and I think I will stick with the pearl gourami and cherry barbs as well... would 2 males be ok, or should I keep a male and a female definitely? as for the rummys, do you think I could fit 8 in? I dont think they add very much to the bioload but I am not sure if my plan was overstocked to begin with...

I have a similiar tank to what you are suggesting just on a bigger scale. Cherry barbs are actually kind of loners but just 2 wouldnt be alot of color. With plants for them to hide in they may disappear altogether. I would suggest a few more.

Yo-yos tend to be more active when there are more of them. I started out with 3 and all they really did was hide. After i got 5 of them they came out more and started playing tag. But at 4-5" when fully grown that many would be a handful in a smaller tank. They also need alot of hiding places to feel secure. (placing pvc pipes under the gravel is a great way to add hiding places without taking up much room (also remember not to glue them together, it doesnt matter if the pvc leaks. One other caution about them is sometimes they get a weird bug and decide to chase other fish in the tank. It can stress them out.

I'm a bit fan of loaches They don't necessarily need to be in a shoal, they're just happier and more active with friends. I personally think three will be fine. Definitely make sure you have some sort of hiding places though.

I like pearl gouramis, but at 4-5" is a 20g large enough for one?

Cherry barbs aren't schoolers, they do fine in pairs. As far as shyness I think it depends on the individual fish. I hardly saw my original M/F pair. The female died not long ago; I added a new female and the 'new' couple is quite active and visible. The males have great coloring and the contrast in colors between the sexes adds some interest to a tank.

Good luck and keep us posted on what you decide.
