29 gallon Stocking... | |
jmara Big Fish Posts: 438 Kudos: 431 Votes: 145 Registered: 06-Mar-2003 | I have my 29 gallon (with 20 gallon sump) and I was curious what you all thought about the following stocking list: 3-4 False Ocellaris Clowns (Amphiprion ocellaris) 1 Rainford's Goby (Amblygobius rainfordi) 1 Six Line Wrasse (Pseudocheilinus hexataenia) I'm a little bit uncertain about the Six Line Wrasse because some sites categorize them as "Slightly agressive. What do you all think? Should I substitute with something else? Or what would you all stock the tank with? Thanks eveyone! -Josh |

The wrasse, IMO, will outcompete the rainfords goby for live foods, which can be pretty detrimental for the goby. I'd also think the wrasse would just appreciate a longer tank, at least 3ft. The wrasse are usually aggressive to newcomers, so they should be the last addition to the tank. I've never seen them bother fish that were already in the tank before they got there. Going back I wouldn't have tried to keep a rainfords with my flasher wrasse. Maybe try a different goby, like one of the prawn gobies, you can then pair it up with pistol shrimp or something. Maybe replace the wrasse with a dartfish, or bangaii cardinal, or maybe a jawfish if you give him enough substrate. Critical Fertilator: The Micromanager of Macronutrients |

Also rainford gobies are a bit controversial in their care and feeding. There was a thread on another forum about them dying fairly young and it was theorized that they might need a more specialized diet than we provide. Particularly that they need a constant supply of live algae in the tank and that they might be eating mostly just the critters living in that algae. Several people have failed to keep them fed in small tanks even when providing lots of live food and algae sheets. Some people have had no trouble keeping them for several years but a higher number have had them disapear or waste away for no apparent reason. Six lines are a rather popular nano fish and I've never heard of them becoming agressive toward clowns, gobies, or blennies which they are often kept with. I would think if they get along in that small of space with noone reporting any problems they should get along in a 29g. It would probably be best to add it last though. |
