Sounds like Diatom algae to me...your tank is pretty new, so this could just be part of the normal process.

What are your water parameters, temp, lighting cycle, lighting system used, water used (tap or ro/di), how much rock is in the tank, and whats your stocking level?

uggg yes...the dreaded diatoms They love the front glass too...be warned.

If you're not already using RO/DI water, you might want to switch to it. Its not a cure, but it might help. (It's better for your tank anyway. ) I'd also try to control how much you're feeding. Excess nutrients in the water is just begging for nuisance algae to grow. Finally depending on the length of your photoperiod you might want to shorten it a bit.

DRO recommended to me getting abalones to help control the diatom. If they're available to you (you'll prolly have to order online) maybe you should try that.

As mentioned, dont get too freaked out. This is normal, and if anything a sign of progress.

What kind of rocks are you talking about? Diatoms would be my first guess, but if you have rocks that have iron in them, then it could very well be just that, rust. If so, it won't hurt your tank, and it will eventually just rust away.
