I have my twenty gallon tank full of live rock and it's cycling as we speak. I'm going to keep it simple - one or two fish tops, and some other cool stuff, brittle star etc...My question...Is there a puffer that could handle such a small tank? Or should I go the clown route, as was my initial plan?

Thanks, and I'm so glad you guys are here. My local fish guy is kind of a punk when it comes to all of my questions.

i would go the clown route, because if you want to keep corals in the future the puffer will eat them.

There are few species of puffer can fit into a 20gal, the best one will be Canthigaster valentini - Saddled Toby, stays below 4 inches. Basically all Canthigaster's stay around that size and not too difficulty to keep, but it is true that they are not reef compatible
