Is activated carbon really needed in marine tanks? It isn't particularly helpful in freshwater tanks, and needs to be replaced often. However, the saltwater books I've been reading trumpet carbon as a major clean-up helper. Is it really that beneficial, and is the constant replacing worth it?

Activated Carbon is by no means necessary in marine tanks, but many will tell you that it does add that extra sparkle. Nothing clears up water like AC can.

At the recent NERAC conference, Joe Burger, who's in my reef club, talked about AC in his reef tank. I can't speak from my own experience, but his tank is amazing, so he must be doing something right! I think he does 1cup per 100 gallons, 1x a month.

As for brands, HydroCarbon, Black Diamond, and Matrix.

Hope this helped a bit.

AC also helps a ton if you are setting up/keeping a mixed reef aquarium where you have LPS, SPS, and softies....certain corals, mainly softies will release a form of chemical warfare, and the AC will help to remove that.

The chemical warfare you speak of, that's where the corals release stinging cells into the water, right? Sort of like long-range missiles, except they don't explode in fireballs when they hit their target.:%)

Not really stinging cells, but and actual chemical. Most soft corals will use chemicals to compete for space, where most LPS corals will use the nematocyst cells to sting. Sps corals use a digestive strand that will actually start to digest another corals tissue.

Ive been using Purigen and it works great. Ploishes the water and doesnt leetch out trace minerals.

And the 100ml comes in a nylon pouch good for 100 gals. Lasts for 4-6 months, can be recharged but a new bag is $7:%)
