After a few months of life (when they have grown to about an inch), they can go from unsexed juveniles to sexually mature adults. The dominant clown in a group will become female, runner up will be male, and the rest will not adopt a gender. These fish can only mature if they leave their group and encounter different circumstances, or if the male or female from the mature pair disappears. And when he gets to Heaven, to Saint Peter he will tell: "One more Marine reporting, Sir! I've served my time in Hell."
