Hi,
I hope to set up a marine tank eventually, but would like to have a tank with only captive bred fish (no impact on natural reefs). What fish are currently available that are captive bred in Australia? Is it actually difficult to breed marine fish? Thanks for your help

There are several that are usually available at your lfs. Some of the more common ones are the cardinal fishes, many of the clowns, jawfish, some of the wrasses, and even others. You will just have to ask your lfs which fish they have that are captive bred. As all of the fish that are captive bred, are still fish that are taken wild as well. There is no way to tell, without asking the seller.

As for being hard, no it is not hard to breed SW fish, as they are doing it all the time in everyones tanks. The hard part is getting the eggs before they get eaten, and then raising the fry. With the exception of a few SW fish that are mouth brooders, all the fry have to go through a larval stage for one to several weeks. This is the crutial time for them, as they are extremely small and require even smaller foods. Once they get through their larval stage, they are just like any other fish. The mouth brooders, jawfish, cardinals, and a very few others, hold the eggs and the fry while they are in their larval stage, in their mouths.

HTH......

Misty, contact the seahorse farms as i know a few of them are starting to breed the most popular marine fish for sale around Australia.

They should be able to tell you who they supply to in your area
