Hello All!

This is directed at those experienced aquarists that have kept cephalopods (squid, octopus, and cuttlefish). I am wondering if at any stages you have had babies, or really small specimens, and what you fed them and how they did on that food source. Any input is appreciated. Thanks alot!

I have had blue ring and caribean blue octopus. I did have the caribeans breed, and had eggs, but never got any fry. If you are looking for cephalopods, I would suggest you go with the squids, or cuddlefish. As the octopus have only a year life span, and if they breed, the female dies right after. The cuddle fish and the squid are both being bred in captivity, so you should be able to find something out about them on the net somewhere.

You've kept Blue Ring Octopi? As in Hapalochlaeana maculosa??? Yikes.

They're lethally venomous. You're a brave aquarist.

Any pics of them?

Ahem.

Either usage is acceptable

Note that Octopus is a defined Genus. Which is a Latinised form of the Greek original. Therefore Latin plural usage is acceptable.

Yes, I have seen that.....but many, like Anthony Calfo will disagree since the word is truly Greek.

Yes Cali, I have kept them. Why, you interested in one? I can get you one for about $250 US, plus shipping. I kept him in a 10 gal octogon tank (lol, dry humor here, lol). I custom made the canopy with a dead bolt on it. And the canopy was mounted to the base, down the back side of the tank. Even if the tank would have gotten knocked over, the blue ring could not have escaped, without the glass actually breaking. I actually found him to be quite boring though. Rarely ever did any moving around. And usually ate at night.

Now the Caribean blue octopus, was a really neat pet. He interacted with me all the time. I even had him playing games with toys in his tank. Was a hoot for friends to watch.

And yes, I am with DRO here, lol. GREEK, lol

One other thing, I am presently thinking about a colony of cuttlefish. Thinking about trying my luck at breeding them next. I'll keep you all posted when I get them set up in a few months.
