I have a fifty gallon saltwater tank, with 10 pounds of live sand, and twenty pounds of regular. Also have about thirty pounds of live rock. I have had the tank up and running for about a few days, and have been adding daily doses of liquid invert. food to kick up the ammonia...No sign of ammonia, though. Levels are zero. Does this take some time? Should I attempt to increase it in another fashion? Thanks so much.

Drop in a cocktail shrimp.

Was the live rock cured or uncured?

Agreed...If you want to get a noticable ammonia spike with cured rock then you will need to add something to kick start it. A raw cocktail shrimp in a new pair of nylons is the easiest way to get it done

After I've placed the shrimp, and I get a spike, how long do I leave it in the tank?

Monitor your levels from day to day, that will be how you can tell.

Yes, place the shrimp inside the nylons...when it starts rotting and giving you your ammonia spike it will be easy to pull out of the tank then...if not you will be "fishing" pieces out for quite awhile!

I did it and the ammonia begins. Should I let it reach it's peak (the ammonia) and then pull the shrimp after it starts to go back down ?
