I asked a question about my percula clown being happy in my fish only tank. Most people thought this was fine, but someone said they have heard of breeders making artificial anemones for their clowns, when they didn't want to deal with keeping real ones. Supposedly the fish really will go play in them. A few people responded to the thread
asking how to go about doing this. The only suggestion so far was to use rubber bands or a koosh ball. Does anyone Know about the saftey of these products in the tank? What about other suggestions on what to make it out of? Any info on the subject is greatly appreciated.

Take some plastic bags from the LFS, cut them into strips (ribbons). Fold the ribbons in half and put a zip tie around the bottom.

Use a good bit of them.

Instant, plastic anemone.

I'm sure it would have to be cleaned or replaced every so often, but it might be worth a shot.

I saw some new fake anemones at my LFS and at PetSmart, too. They were soft and I think they would move like a real anemones. They had different kinds at PetSmart, I remember a carpet, a condy or pink tip, and a bubble tip. The colors were a little bright, though.

I use fake ones too. The colours are unbelievable but the plastic is too rigid for them to move 'naturally'. My clowns do spend time in them though (well, one anenome anyway). In a fish only, they look great as its not meant to be 'too realistic' - the fish do that for you.

I did see a few fake ones at my LFS, but they were relatively expensive ($14-$20), didn't look very realistic, weren't very big, and seemed a bit rigid. I might check out petsmart, petco, petland and marine scene today to see if they sell any better ones.

I've seen the rigid ones, too. Looks wierd. These new ones are soft and rubbery (almost jelly-like), though. The tenticles (SP?) would just flow like a regular anemone. The colors were too bright to look real, except on the condy which isn't a natural clown host. I think they were between $14 and $20, too. But that's cheaper than most real anemones

I must've misunderstood.

Do you want them for decoration or for clown breeding?

Well, mostly for decoration I guess. My percula's been in the tank for three days and its spent almost all of its time hiding up in the back corner. I think it might be afraid of the blue damsel in the tank, even though the damsel hasnt shown any sign of aggression toward it. Perhaps a fake anemone would coax it out of the corner and make it feel a bit safer.
