hi! i've noticed lately that there seem to be an increasing number of what i think are feather dusters in my tank (pinkish-clear; 3-5 mm diameter; single row of 'feathers'). they seem to be coming out of the live rock.

are they okay to have in a tank? the ones i see are quite small, but i have seen some for sale in petstores that are very large... will mine grow to that size? do they need to be fed?

i've tried to find some information on them on the web in general, but a lot of it seems very technical. any basics you could give me would be great!

There are different species of feather dusters. The ones in stores are entirely different than the kinds you normally get on liverock. Those are more sensitive and have a higher chance of starving to death. For hitchhikers there are tiny spiral feather dusters that can spread fairly quickly everywhere and somewhat bigger dusters that look like a mini version of the ones in the store. The latter will spread much slower than the little spirals and won't spread onto the glass. None of the feather dusters are harmful to your tank and will filter the water for food.

One thing to keep in mind though is that if you are getting a huge explosion of 'duster growth on your rock and in your sand bed then you need to look at exporting nutrients because your nutrient levels are high. The only place that the explosion would be "acceptable" is in a fuge because nutrient levels are expected to be higher there for export with algaes.

i don't think it's an explosion... there're only about 5 in total, but there was only one or two in the beginning.
