I understand these guys are reef safe, and ok for a small tank, but I was wondering if anybody knew if they eat the pods and other beneficial goodstuffs in reeftype aquariums.

So will a "blueline"(looks most like a carpenters, but mostly just red with a nice blue line down the side of it's body) flasher wrasse decimate my pod population in a 30G like a twelveline would?

Indeed they will....they will eat pods, bristleworms, and other tiny critters. It may be lessened if they are kept well fed, but I wouldnt plan on it. With your fuge I wouldnt think you would have much of a problem with it personally.

hmmm....I might think about getting this guy then. thanks

Also, do they NEED to be in groups or is it that males just act cooler with the ladies around?

Certain wrasses (males) will only show their true colors when females are around. Soooo....It all depends on what wrasse you get.

As well, they will show their awesome finnages more often with a female around. Problem is, many times these guys are sold too small to sex. So be careful and make sure someone that knows how to sex them does. As the females don't always look as good as the males in some species. These fish make great reef inhabitants.

Thanks guys, the fish in question is about 2.5 in. long and I'm pretty sure it's a male. He's got the super long dorsal fin in the back. I think that's how you judge sex on those....correct me if I'm wrong please. Anyways the fish is in excellent health and is eating anything that we feed - flake, mysis, brine formula 1 & 2. I might bring him home tomorrow.
