Just finished about 1.5yrs of research and i think i am about ready to set up the fowlr, i have a 75G im taking down and converting it to salt water, the tanks only 2 months old. So im just curious is it better to have a fluval canister filter, or to have HOB such as 2 Aqua Clear 500's? And also what kinda power head would be the best for the tank, for no dead spots? Also a decently priced but good protein skimmer?

Well i would go with the fluval canister more filtering options. Powerheads i like the eheim powerball cause you can move them to aim the water. and skimmer i would go with the prizim HOB skimmer.

i would go with the coralife super skimmer if you are more budget minded. i have the small one, the css65 and i really love it. it was only $100 and it works as good as some that cost 3 times as much. get the largest one that you can fit or afford. you want to skim that tank like crazy.
as for filters, i would go with one canister and use powerheads, a closed loop, or a sump setup for flow. more filters are just going to create a lot of maintenace for you. the skimmer will filter 90% of the water anyway.
i really like rena filstar xp3. i think it, again is the most bang for the buck. online you can get one for near $100.

I only trust two brands of salt.

Tropic Marin is the first one, which I use myself.

Aquamedic, which isn't usually widely available, would be the only other one I'd use.
