Pineapple sponges....they are harmless filter feeders that filter nutrients from the water.

How big do they get? Is it normal to have them growing everywhere?

thats about as big as they get. they will grow pretty well in a high nutrient system.

Are you running a skimmer? How often are you doing water changes?

No, I'm not running a skimmer, I know I should be. I change the water once a month, is that too long to wait?

weekly would be best.....every other week would be next...etc, etc.

Id have to guess that the mysis that you are feeding is adding to the nutrients since you said they started showing up shortly after you started feeding it.

Are you thawing and rinsing the mysis off before you feed it to the tank?

I thaw it but dont rinse. Would rinse it help.

So changing the water every week will slow the growth of the pineapple sponges.

I have a 55 gal. I have been changing out about 5 gallons of water, is that to much or not enough?

Rinsing the mysis will help to wash away some of the excess nutrients that just go into the tank and are not used by the fish. Your filter feeders love the excess nutrients, which is why the sponges are popping up.

The sponges are not bad, and usually dont get carried away.

I would do a 10 gallon water change every other week and see what happens.
