If so, I would assume its something coming out of the live rock. It looks almost like the kind of cases freshwater cadis fly larvae live in. Perhaps some type of larval case of something? If they're sessile they could be the cases of small tube worms. In which case, while they are probably harmless, and may even turn out to be quite decorative in their own right, you'll have a fun time identifying them because this is, strictly speaking, a task that requires a professional invertebrate zoologist and some specimens to dissect. Even determining them to Family level could prove to be an interesting exercise, let alone to Genus or species level. If they're motile ... in that case you have me seriously puzzled. |

Most tube worms will attach themselves to a substrate given the chance. However, the ones I'm familiar with tend to fall into the class of "large and adult", as in fanworms that produce big 6 inch plus spreads of tentacles when they open. Whether they behave the same right from the moment they start building tubes as little juvenile worms is open to question. Again, we're into the territory of seeking an invertebrate zoologist, and possibly donating some specimens for dissection, as this tends to be the ONLY way many invertebrates CAN be identified conclusively. You will CERTAINLY have to sacrifice some specimens if you want them identifying to species level. |

How easy are they to squish? Is it just tubes made out of thin white shells or softer material? Can't really tell much detail from the picture. |
