im planning on getting some tridacna maxima for my reef aquarium, and some new lighting, its a 75 gallon (48 1/2 x 18 1/2 x 21 3/8). I'm thinkng about geting two diffrent hoods for it, one for blue actinic, and one for standard lighing. I want metal Halide fixtures, about 200 watts each, and possibally retro-fit? if i get metal H. what type of buld would be best, HQI or single end? I also want 10-14k. for the clams to have proper light. I dont want to heat-up the aquarium too much, how far away can i have the lighing be and still have it effectivally reach the whole tank? Saying that the clam(s) were closer/on the bottom of the tank and not further up on the rock.

You'll probably want the halides around 12 inches off the water surface, maybe more as long as the corals and clams are getting enough light.

Also think about installing some fans in your hood. This will help move the heat off the aquarium.

As far as bulb type goes....hqi are great because of the pendant style lighting, but since you are going for the retrofit, single ended bulbs will be just fine.

I agree with 12 inches off the water should not heat the water up too bad. Fans are an excellent idea. You dont have any glass covers on top do you?

Well the lighting im seriously looking at now is 2x 175 watt 14k mh's. If anything it would be suspended 12-14 inches off the water, and have two fans on it, one fan blowing in one end and the other sucking air out the opposite end. and to answer your question melosu, at the moment i dont have any covers for that tank.

Good, because that would cause two problems. one would be a low ph due to poor gas exchange at the surface and the other would be heating issues as the glass top would trap heat and then you`ll be dealing with higher than needed temps.
